Floyd Mayweather decided your attention had been diverted quite enough with the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup and other such flotsam that isn’t his next fight, so he offered to box Oscar De La Hoya .
I say why stop there?
Let’s bring the band back together and get Ricky Hatton and Shane Mosley to come back to the ring for one more go; it could be like some perverse version of “Diggstown,” lining up a bunch of boxers who have more wisdom than endurance.
But the offer, an obvious joke, to fight the very much retired De La Hoya flittered off into the transom of the Internet, catching on in the form of anESPN report that featured an actual response from the 42-year-old.
You see, the notion was just crazy enough, just Mayweather’s level of insane that we really should have seen it coming.
But the comment that we presume was made in complete jest was still captured by Black Sports Online’s Kel Dansby in an Instagram video.
Among the most pertinent statements was the one that landed like a comedic anvil: “He said he wanted a rematch, so if Oscar wants it, he can get it.”
